In Chinese or Asian barbecue restaurants all across Hong Kong, char siu is a delicious barbecued pork that is very popular. Because we also use this meat in many other meals, it is well-known in Chinese culture. Let's take a closer look at the purpose of some of the special ingredients in the recipe.
Red fermented bean curd will give the meat its natural red color without additives. Sweet barbecue flavor provided by hoisin sauce. The Chinese five-spice gives this dish a pleasant and signature aroma and taste, as it consists mainly of cassia, fennel seeds, star anise, and cloves.
Air Fryer Char Siu Ingredients

Slice pork butt into two equal long slices. Transfer to a large bowl.
In a medium bowl combine fermented red bean curd, hoisin sauce, brown sugar, regular soy sauce, honey, wine and Chinese five spice. Mix until dissolved.
Pour marinade over pork. Marinate overnight or for at least 6 hours. The sauce you marinate will permeate your meat for 6 hours, thus making it both softer and more aromatic.
In a bowl combine honey, hoisin sauce and fermented red bean curd. Mix until smooth.
Place marinated pork in an air fryer basket in a single layer. Brush the glaze all over the pork.
Air fryer at 400°F for 16 minutes in total.
Flipping over & basting at every 4 minutes mark. Once cooked it should have char marks and an internal temperature of 145°F.
Let it rest for 10 minutes before slicing thinly.
You can consume Air Fryer Char Siu with risotto, vegetables or greens if you wish.
